2026 Subaru Outback: More SUV, Still an Outback The all-new 2026 Subaru Outback takes a noticeable step toward the traditional midsize SUV without abandoning the hardware that made the nameplate distinctive. Standard Symmetrical AWD, 2 available SUBARU BOXER® engines, up to 80.5 cu. ft. of cargo capacity, and as much as 9.5 inches of ground clearance give it capability beyond the typical family crossover. For drivers around Huntington, NY, the redesigned Outback also brings more technology and 6 trims with enough mechanical differences to make choosing one more interesting. Start With 180 HP or Step Up to 260 HP Premium, Limited, and Touring trims use a naturally aspirated 2.5L SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder producing 180 hp. Subaru Symmetrical AWD with Active Torque Vectoring comes standard, as does X-MODE® with Hill Descent Control. These models can tow up to 2,700 lbs. Limited XT and Touring XT replace that engine with a Turbocharged 2.4L SUBARU BOXER® producing 260 hp and increase towing capacity to 3,500 lbs. The XT models also receive 19-inch alloy wheels, while Limited XT adds a 360-degree Surround View Monitor. Six Trims That Change More Than the Badging The lineup includes Premium, Limited, Limited XT, Touring, Touring XT, and Wilderness. Premium starts with a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster, 12.1-inch Subaru Multimedia System, wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, Keyless Access with Push-Button Start, and a Power Rear Gate. Limited adds a 12-speaker Harman Kardon® premium audio system, power moonroof, heated steering wheel, heated rear outboard seats, Qi® wireless charging, and navigation. Touring moves into more luxurious territory with perforated Nappa leather-trimmed upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, power-folding exterior mirrors, and a 360-degree Surround View Monitor. Wilderness Earns Its Extra Ground Clearance The Outback Wilderness isn't an appearance package with chunkier tires and optimistic marketing. It uses the 260 hp Turbocharged 2.4L engine, increases ground clearance from 8.7 to 9.5 inches, and adds a raised suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Dual-Mode X-MODE® provides Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings along with low-speed/low-ratio gradient control. Wilderness also receives StarTex® upholstery with Anodized Copper contrast stitching, Harman Kardon® premium audio, and a 3,500 lb. towing capacity. It's the Outback aimed squarely at owners whose roof racks and trail equipment aren't decorative. More Room for People and Their Stuff At 191.7 inches long, the 2026 Outback remains manageable enough for ordinary parking lots while providing legitimate midsize utility. Front legroom measures 43.0 inches, with another 39.5 inches available in the rear. Lower the rear seatbacks and maximum cargo volume reaches 80.5 cu. ft. The roof rails can support up to 220 lbs. while driving and 800 lbs. with the vehicle stationary, adding another layer of flexibility for bikes, kayaks, cargo carriers, and compatible rooftop camping equipment. The Screens Get Bigger, and Safety Stays Central Premium establishes a strong technology baseline with its 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 12.1-inch multimedia display. EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology and DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System are also included, along with Reverse Automatic Braking, Blind-Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Warning. Touring and Touring XT introduce available hands-free driver-assistance technology for certain predetermined highways, including Hands-Free Assist, Pre-Curve Speed Control and Automatic Resume Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, and Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection. Which 2026 Outback Belongs in Your Driveway? Premium covers the essentials with standard AWD, substantial technology, and 2,700-lb towing capability. Limited and Touring layer on comfort and cabin equipment, while Limited XT and Touring XT add the 260-hp turbocharged engine and increase towing capacity to 3,500 lbs. Wilderness takes that turbo power in another direction with 9.5 inches of ground clearance, specialized suspension hardware, and Dual-Mode X-MODE®. The result is an Outback range broad enough to cover family hauling, highway travel, and genuinely rough weekends without pretending they're all the same job. Subaru Safety: More Than a Collection of Warning Beeps Modern cars have become remarkably good at watching things. Subaru has leaned particularly hard into that idea, building a safety strategy around cameras, driver monitoring, braking intervention, and systems designed to keep track of what is happening beyond the driver's immediate field of view. EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology forms the backbone, but the current Subaru lineup can also bring blind-spot monitoring, Reverse Automatic Braking, DriverFocus®, and 360-degree visibility into the equation. For drivers around Huntington, NY, the interesting part is how those technologies change from one Subaru to another. EyeSight® Does Most of the Watching Up Front EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology is standard on models including the Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, Ascent, and WRX. Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering can maintain following distance while assisting with steering, braking, and throttle control, while Automatic Pre-Collision Braking can warn of a potential frontal collision and apply braking force when needed. The 2026 Outback builds considerably further from that foundation. Every trim includes EyeSight®, DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System, Blind-Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Warning, and Reverse Automatic Braking. Touring and Touring XT also offer Hands-Free Assist for compatible highways, extending Subaru's assistance beyond the familiar collection of alerts and dashboard graphics. The Forester Keeps an Eye on the Corners Every 2026 Forester receives EyeSight® and a Rear-Vision Camera, but moving through the trim range brings additional coverage. Blind-Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are standard on Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring and available on Premium. Wilderness and Touring include Reverse Automatic Braking, which can intervene to help avoid an object while backing up. Touring goes one step further with a 360-degree Surround View Monitor. It creates a top-down perspective around the Forester, which is especially handy when the obstacle threatening your afternoon isn't another moving vehicle but a curb, shopping cart, or inconveniently positioned parking-space divider. Crosstrek Fits Plenty of Safety into a Smaller Package The 2026 Crosstrek combines standard EyeSight® with newly standard rear-seat side airbags. Available Blind-Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Reverse Automatic Braking extend coverage around the sides and rear, while DriverFocus® is newly available for 2026 and standard on Limited. There is also independent crash-test recognition behind the equipment list: the 2026 Crosstrek earned a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from NHTSA. The result is a compact SUV that doesn't treat its smaller footprint as an excuse for a smaller safety portfolio. Ascent Has Up to 8 People to Look After The three-row 2026 Ascent seats up to 8, so its standard safety equipment carries a little more responsibility. EyeSight®, Blind-Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Reverse Automatic Braking are standard across the lineup. Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering is joined by Emergency Stop Assist, a system designed to respond if the driver becomes unresponsive while adaptive cruise control is operating. It can bring the Ascent to a stop, activate the hazard lights, and unlock the doors. DriverFocus® is also standard on Limited, Limited Bronze Edition, Touring, and Onyx Edition Touring. Even the WRX Gets the Electronic Chaperones The WRX exists for a different reason than an Ascent. Still, Subaru hasn't used performance as permission to remove its driver-assistance systems. EyeSight® is standard across every 2026 WRX trim, including Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, Pre-Collision Braking, and Lane Departure and Sway Warning with Lane Keep Assist. Automatic Emergency Steering is standard on Limited, GT, and tS. So while the WRX may approach a winding road with considerably more enthusiasm than the family three-row, Subaru's core safety technology comes along for the ride. Crash Testing Gives the Hardware Some Context Safety equipment lists can become an alphabet soup of trademarked systems, which makes independent testing particularly valuable. Under the more demanding IIHS 2026 testing criteria, the 2026 Forester, Outback, and Ascent each earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. The updated evaluation incorporates tougher rear-passenger protection and crash-prevention requirements, giving those awards significance beyond simply counting how many assistance systems appear on a specification sheet. Explore Subaru Safety at Empire Subaru of Huntington Subaru safety technology varies enough by model and trim that it's worth comparing the systems alongside engines, cargo space, and cabin equipment.
